The Strawman Cometh at Rex's Birthday Bash

Strawman will be headlining tonight's show at the Sophisticated Otter. TEAM ROCK will be on hand to celebrate REX MUNDI's Birthday and to attend the KILLER show scheduled for tonight @ 11pm. I have been listening to their stuff from their Web Page and they have a great sound. Their music is really strong and it will be a great show. I took an instant liking to their music and will probably being buying their CDs tonight after the show. downBleed will be opening for them tonight. This will be my first chance to see them play. Remember, if you come for downBleed, make sure you hang around for Strawman, as these guys from DC will be a show not to miss.

This is another show from the team of FRENCH and STEVE. If you miss this show, you will be sorry. I am not sure of the price tonight. Strawman's Web Site says $5 - French, at one time told me possibly $2 or less - but at whatever they decide to charge, it will be worth it. Trust me on this one. And anyways, everybody has to come out to tell REX Happy Birthday! See you there!

GOING THROUGH CHANGES

JC SCENE has undergone a title change. It is now called ROAD REX. Local music, etc. is pretty much covered by TEAM ROCK, so an additional similar site seems like overkill. ROAD REX will focus more on in-depth coverage of my travels and experiences (cons, concerts, etc.). I'll still post local reviews there, as well as here. RR will just delve deeper into extraneous experiences! The url has not changed. ROAD REX will still be found @ jcscene.blogspot.com - thanx! -

WEIRD AL ROCKED BOTCON!!!

I've returned from the OTFCC (formerly BOTCON). I'll have a full report soon! Upon arriving at the con, we got word that WEIRD AL would be performing two shows on the NAVY PIER the next night! On the chance that we might get some tickets, DAVE and I headed out on the train Saturday night. As luck would have it, we met a very nice couple (thanks Cristie!) with two tickets for sale. They had some folks bail due to a wedding and sold us the tickets for purchase price! We got sweet seats about twelve rows back and prepared for weirdness. The show was excellent! All the hits were performed, each in their specific costumes. The highlight was the encore : THE SAGA BEGINS and YODA! The front row fans had all brought light up lightsabers...wow, what a neat vision! Lightsabers played a big part in the weekend! More to come on that subject! The show was a perfect cap to a great con experience! Get your 'poodle hat' and go see AL!!!

TRANSFORM AND ROLL OUT

It's back to Chicago this weekend for BOTCON 2003 (the official convention of the TRANSFORMERS). The dorkness continues! There will be the annual dealer room 'running of the unwashed' as well as some great guests! GARRY CHALK (Beast Wars/Machines Primal, Armada, Masters of the Universe, Stargate, etc.) and DAVID KAYE (Beast Wars/Machines Megatron, etc.) are the highlights of the guest list...Uncle Garry is one hell of a drinking partner! Several voice actors from the original series will be in attendance as well. It's too bad I'm missing all these great local acts, but there will be a few interludes between BOTCON, the IRON MAIDEN concert, and DRAGONCON...hopefully I can catch a few local shows.

G-FEST X THIS WEEKEND!!!!

Once again it's road trip time...didn't we just get back? . DAVE and I shall be 'getting our geek on' at G-FEST X, North America's only annual convention devoted to GODZILLA, GAMERA, and other KAIJU. It will be in Chicago this year, so XYON and SKY are going along as well to do some city exploring. I will definately have to return to MITSUWA and CHINATOWN! I can't wait to see GAMERA 3 and GMK on the big screen...uncut and subtitled!!!!! I'll have a full report upon my return. G-FEST is always full of memorable/kodak moments. They're not the LENNON show drunken debauchery kind, but enjoyable none the less!!!

Review Lennon Show in Richmond KY

The full blown post can be read at Xyon's Rambles where we go through Corbin, KY and eat at the first ever KFC and leads you up to the time we arrive at MF Hooligans. For here though, I am starting at the time when we leave The Buddha Belly and make our way to...

... the ATM for a quick splash of cash and head back to MF Hooligans. Being there early we are able to get choice seats (like we would use them after Lennon started - which we didn't) and started the rounds of pitchers. We drank them dry of Killians Red (which was 1.6 pitchers) and drank Amber Bock the rest of the night. I spotted Lennon over by the pool tables and had to go over and say hi. She was a little upset and told me that her guitar player had been out with someone last night who had gotten a DUI. He had only called 1hr previous telling her this (which would have been around 7pm) and said he could not make it to play.

Now let me back up a little bit. I had seen Lennon twice before and both times TECH was her guitar player. So I didn't even know who this guy was. Lennon goes on to say that TECH would be filling in for him (and Thank God he was around). I then ask her about the new album. I had looked for it where their stuff was for sale and didn't see it. :( She said that she had gotten word that they had finished mixing the last song (earlier on Saturday) and they now had to figure out if they were going to try and find another label or try and do it themselves.

After going back to the table and telling Rex and CroMag about the conversation, Rex asks me to take his art CD over to Lennon. She tells me how great the cover and inside art looks tells me to thank him. I let her know that she will probably meet him a bit later as he will be getting a shirt and will want her to sign it. After Rex got a little more liquid courage we go back over, she signs his shirt, and she thanks us again for making the trip up. Rex tells her it was our pleasure to make the trip to see her play and then quotes Harry Chapin. He said, "and as my favorite musician says - 'Go Do Something'" She then informs us that Harry Chapin is her favorite artist too. TIME FROZE (to people who know me - that will be funny ;) The music from the club was blaring and I wasn't sure I heard her correctly. Then she starts talking about the song 'Sniper' and shows Rex her tatoos on her wrist.

After we get back to the table, I ask Rex what she was saying about the tatoos on her wrist and, where the music was real loud, he didn't really catch it either. But I could not let it rest. I head back over and ask Lennon. She motions me back to the back area so she can tell me. She shows the tatoos again. On one wrist it was the letter "I" and on the other wrist it was the letters "AM", which were done nicely in some kind of pattern. She goes on to tell me that the song 'Sniper' (from Harry Chapin) is her favorite song. She says, "Remember when, in the song he is up in the tower..." and proceeds to quote lyrics from the song. This sends chills up my back because 'Sniper' is probably my favorite song as well and I tell her so. At the end of the song - just before the sniper is shot, he screams I AM - to her that was it and I agree. She also said that "somehow, someway - I will cover that song!" I can hardly wait to hear her do it.

Just after 9pm, Sway took the stage and put on a suprisingly strong performance. I suppose it is surprising because usually the first opening band (of 3) is local and still trying to find their way. These guys were local to Lexington but they have found everything as they rocked the club. Next was Circle Four. These guys were good too (sorry guys, I don't have a picture of them scanned). They only thing about them was I think the lead singer was trying too hard. He had a strong voice and the band played really well, but there was something I can only describe as not quite there yet. I see them only getting better though and they will be playing at the Sophisticated Otter again soon. I look forward to seeing these guys again and hope that they bring Sway with them!

Lennon exploded onto stage around 11pm. Rex, CroMag, and myself had moved to the front of the stage (the only times we left was the occasional beer run, which thankfully, was done by Rex.) Her first song was Property of Goatfuckerand as she went through songs I knew by heart and new songs I will know after her album is released, I couldn't help but think how much I had missed seeing one of her shows. During the breaks between songs she would talk a little, but while she has no problem singing in front of audiences, she is a little shy when she has to talk. I understand this perfectly.

During one of her songs, she knelt down on the side of the stage where I was standing and sang to me a little. I was floored and everybody else around me fizzled out until it was just the two of us. This lasted, oh about, 10 seconds, but it could have been an eternity.

The rest of the set was awesome. The only thing I missed was the keyboards. Afterward she told me that it had broken a few nights ago. (so there was no 5:30 Saturday Morning). Also afterwards she let me get a picture with her. Rex had to get just right angle from the camera so it took a little time extra - needless to say, I did not mind at all. Thanks Man! I was also waiting on the inevitable screaming from the bouncers that I heard last time I was at MF Hooligans, but it did not come. Finally at around 12:20am a person comes up to me and says that they really have to get everybody out and could we please wrap it up (which is the way it should be). I told them sure and started to leave. On the way out I go over to Lennon one last time and say good-bye. I figured by now I was starting to bug her, so I put up my hand to wave, but she reached over and gave me a long hug (which will not be forgotten).

My thanks go out to Lennon for being so gracious to us and signing everything we presented to her and taking pictures with us. She is simply the Best!

Same goes for Circle Four and Sway. Tremendous Bands!

BEHOLD...LENNON

I saw one hell of a performance by LENNON in Richmond, KY over the weekend. From soothing croons to screeching growls, Lennon Murphy's vocal range ( not to mention her talent ) defies limitations. This up and coming performer/songwriter is not to be missed! If she comes anywhere near your town, do not miss her! Her album 5:30 SATURDAY MORNING is just one gem after another. Of course my personal fave is PROPERTY OF GOATFUCKER...'nuff said! It makes for a nice shirt as well! My thanks to Lennon for signing my shirt/cd and for taking the time to talk some HARRY CHAPIN......"I AM!!!!!!"

CIRCLEFOUR REVIEW

The LENNON show was worth every mile through the horrid wasteland that is Kentucky. I'll have a review of her show soon. For now I just wanted to say a few words about the second opening act, CIRCLEFOUR. Their sound reminded me of a cross between a mellow DISTURBED and STAIND. Thematically, they fall more toward the STAIND comparison...lots of emotional subjects lyrically (at least as I remember it through the Amber Bock haze). CF has a free two song (No More and Consequences) demo for show attendees. I spun mine a couple of times today. I'm really digging the track No More. CF will be playing in our area soon, keep checking in for the date/venue.

...my thanks to Chris, Tony, Mike, and Josh for the demo and for signing my shirt! Keep the music alive!

Lennon Rocked Richmond, KY

Lennon put on a tremendous show Saturday night. The big suprise hit was the 1st band of the evening Sway. The second band, Circle Four did a great job as well. Circle Four has played Johnson City already (Sophisticated Otter) and they tell me they will be returning to the area in a couple of months. They will email me when the show is confirmed and it will be posted here.

Expect a full review of this Excursion Into Madness soon. Pictures were taken and as soon as I get them (and depending how they turned out) I will post them here with the review. Needless to say the shows was great and MF Hooligans is now off my shit list. The last time I was there I swore I would never go back (only Lennon was able to get me to return) but this time it was a totally different place at closing. I got to talk to, get pictures taken with, and a couple of nice hugs from Lennon. More to come - Stay Tuned.

There is another picture, which is the sign of the trip, posted over at Xyon's Rambles. This picture was for a sign at another small bar across the street from MF Hooligans. Just too funny - Holy Shit!

THE SUPERJOINT RITUAL SHOW...

The SUPERJOINT RITUAL show was another great success for ANSLEY. The place was packed by the time SJR started. Of course the whole floor became a giant mosh pit, but it wasn't as violently chaotic as I thought it would be. SJR also allowed stage diving and surfing. The hardcore fans definately got their money's worth. I'm not a huge SJR fan, but it was a sight to behold. My thanks to Hank III for signing my ticket stub. I missed openers OMEGA TRIBE...anyone have any thoughts? ONE30EDGE made their long awaited return with a great performance. FULL BLOWN CHAOS was okay...not really my thing though.

A FIRE INSIDE

In an age full of homongenized 'hardcore' and 'heavy' music, it's always refreshing to hear something different. When it's AFI, it's not only different, it's the best damn thing you're probably going to hear. AFI blurs the lines of every genre, while maintaining an urgent ferocity and undeniable talent. Their latest release 'Sing the Sorrow' is one of those 'perfect' albums...the kind that only comes along every few years. Call it emo-thrash-punkadelia...call it what you will, but no pigeon-holing description could ever do justice to their unique sound. Lay off the current nu-metal scream-a-thon and try some AFI...if it doesn't change your world, you don't deserve to live.
