RIP DIMEBAG
Dimebag Darrell, guitarist for Pantera and Damage Plan, was one of at least four people fatally wounded during a bizarre shooting at a concert in Columbus, Ohio on Wednesday night.
According to Columbus NBC affiliate NBC4, Dimebag — real name Darrell Abbott — and one of his bandmates were among the fatalities resulting from the incident, which occurred during a Damage Plan performance at the Alrosa Villa in Columbus. Authorities did not release the name of the other deceased band member to NBC4. Columbus police told MTV News that a total of four people were killed and two wounded, and that the death toll included the assailant.
One witness told the NBC affiliate that a man jumped onto the stage during the first song of the band's set and began firing a gun. According to the witness, the man fired several shots at the band before being tackled by club security. One of the survivors is in critical condition at a local hospital, while another is in fair condition.
"A Columbus police officer, when he arrived, engaged the shooter, and the shooter is also dead, and if the officer hadn't acted when he did and how he did, we'd probably be looking at more dead, because this guy was actively shooting," Sergeant Brent Mull, public information officer, told MTV News.
"We have 200-plus patrons that we have sequestered inside three city buses," Sergeant Mull explained. "We are interviewing them one by one. The ones that were inside and witnessed this, ran for their lives and were in fear for their lives. They are victims too, and we want to take care of them."
As news of Dimebag's bizarre and tragic demise rippled through the metal community, the news was met with shock and sadness.
"I'm speechless," friend and Rob Zombie/Ozzy Osbourne bassist Rob "Blasko" Nicholson said. "This is totally unreal. Dimebag is a f---ing legend and this is total bull----."
"This is insane and this is beyond travesty," Killswitch Engage frontman, and former Damage Plan tour partner, Howard Jones said. "This is beyond anything I've ever heard. This shouldn't happen in or outside of the rock and metal community. He will be missed and mourned as a person, as a musician, and as a friend."
UPDATE:
By JAY COHEN, Associated Press Writer
COLUMBUS, Ohio - A gunman charged onstage at a packed nightclub and opened fire on the band and crowd, killing top heavy metal guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott and three other people before a police officer shot him to death, authorities and witnesses said. Police spokeswoman Sherry Mercurio identified three of the victims of Wednesday's shooting as Abbott, who played for the Texas-based band Damageplan, and two other men, Nathan Bray, 23; and Erin Halk, 29.
She identified the gunman as Nathan Gale, 25, of Marysville, 25 miles northwest of Columbus. Police said they had no information on a motive or any connection to the band.
The gunman had a hostage in a headlock and seemed to be preparing to kill him when the officer, James D. Niggemeyer, managed to shoot without injuring the hostage, police said.
Damageplan had just begun its first song at Alrosa Villa club when the man shot Abbott five or six times at point-blank range, a witness said.
Abbott, 38, one of metal's top guitarists, and his brother, Damageplan drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott, were members of Pantera, the Grammy-nominated thrash-rock pioneer that enjoyed wide popularity in the 1990s.
The witness, 22-year-old Chris Couch, said he was standing about 30 feet from the stage when he saw a man wearing a hooded sweat shirt walk up to the stage, followed by a bouncer and another club employee.
The man in the sweat shirt climbed onto the stage, started yelling and opened fire on the guitarist, then shot a bouncer who pulled him off the musician, Couch said.
Police spokesman Sgt. Brent Mull said that after shooting at band members, the gunman fired into the crowd. Niggemeyer, patrolling nearby, arrived within two minutes, he said.
"If the officer wasn't as close as he was, I think this would have been a lot worse," Mull said. "It was a chaotic scene, just a horrific scene."
Niggemeyer, 31, entered the club through a back door and was directed to the stage, where he saw one person lying dead and the suspect holding onto another "pretty much in a headlock," Mull said.
"The officer was able to strategically gun this guy down before he was able to kill this hostage," Mull said. He said the hostage, "probably a fan, maybe someone who worked with the band," was able to maneuver out of the way somewhat before the officer fired.
Mull said he believed there was amateur video that officers could view for clues.
The name of the fifth person killed was not immediately released. Mercurio said family members were still being notified.
Thursday morning, a dozen yellow roses, still in plastic wrap, lay near the entry to the low-slung beige building that since 1974 has hosted mostly heavy metal acts. The 641-person-capacity club, just off a freeway exit on the city's north side, sits amid motels, small businesses and office complexes.
After the shooting began, Couch and a friend headed for the exit along with a tide of hundreds of fans.
"It was definitely a grudge. It was against something," Couch said.
Amanda Stankus, 19, who attended the show with Couch, said she initially thought the shooting was part of the show. "I just saw the guitarist fall down, and we decided to get out of there," she said.
The Abbott brothers produced Damageplan's debut album, "New Found Power," which was released in February. Other band members are vocalist Patrick Lachman and bassist Bob Zilla.
"Damageplan carries on the tradition Pantera started, the ... hell-raising tradition we were all about," Vinnie Paul Abbott told The Dallas Morning News in October. "We do play some Pantera songs. Me and Dime wrote them, and we feel like we have the right to play them. But the focus is on Damageplan.
"It took awhile for some of the Pantera fans to accept it; we knew that was gonna be the case," he said. "Change is something that people have a hard time accepting. But me and Dime intended on doing this our whole lives."
A message left with Atlantic Records Group, which oversees Damageplan's label Elektra, was not immediately returned.
Damageplan's Web site said Darrel and Vinnie Abbott grew up in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where their father, country songwriter Jerry Abbott, owned a recording studio.
Telephone numbers for Darrell and Jerry Abbott are unlisted and could not be reached early Thursday by The Associated Press.
Pantera, known for its fast, aggressive sound, recorded several albums in the 1990s, attracting a massive cult following. The third release, "Far Beyond Driven," debuted at No. 1 in 1994, surprising chart-watchers and critics alike. Other hit albums were "The Great Southern Trendkill" and "Reinventing The Steel." A song by the band became the Dallas Stars hockey team's signature tune in 1999.
Pantera was nominated for Grammies for best metal performance in 1995 for "I'm Broken" and in 2001 for "Revolution Is My Name."
The video "The Best of Pantera: Far Beyond the Great Southern Cowboys' Vulgar Hits" hit the top 10 for music-video sales earlier this year; another video, "3-Watch It Go," hit the top 10 in 1998.
The shootings came exactly 24 years after John Lennon was shot to death outside his New York apartment building by a deranged fan.
Dozens of messages were posted to the Dallas band's Web site after the shootings.
"This is the worst day in metal history," one posting read.
"The metal world feels your pain," another wrote.

Cahootenanny’s
It may be cold outside but things are definitely going to be HOT at Cahoot's this Saturday night Nov 20.Don't miss Jager sponsoredSik Souls www.siksouls.com as they take over the night at one of the few places they can actually give out all that great FREE Jager stuff.Of course we will have drink specials all night to help them warm you up.
Then if your still a little chilled the guys from Rite of Passage www.riteofpassageband.com will be taking the stage to finish things off.Just in case you haven't heard them I will quote them here, "Description: Slightly agressive, yet we always find time to cuddle! A solid platform of aural pleasure with pieces of jazz, electronics, and a hint of hardcore. Something to please even the most delicate palate."
Now if the doesn't leave felling all warm inside I guess you just have to go for some of the best pizza anywhere in the South anyway!
This show will be brought to you by AFT, Coors Light and Cahootenanny's so get out here and make AFT some money so they can keep those great national acts coming thru without the corporate help of AC E.

Ireson’s Pub
Trenton NJ's The CryptKeeper 5 are stopping off at Ireson's Pub in Bristol on their current tour. If you've never heard them then don't miss this show. Their musical style is comparable to say The E Street Band and The Beaver Brown Band.
In other words it's just kick a** American Blue Collar Rock n' Roll with sax and keyboards.
Also playing will be WV's own Blitzkid. Arguably the best horror rock band on the planet right now.
The show is this Friday, Nov. 19th.
Sophisticated Otter
After a year of memorable shows, new found fans, and many unexpected opportunities, Witherspoon has announced one last show this year before changing their focus to 2005. The band will join forces with Stickhorse on Saturday, November 20th to bring a fireball of energy to The Sophisticated Otter, a night spot that is not generally know for metal performances.
Witherspoon was formed in 2003, when Bo Blackwell (drums) and Jon Frazier (bass) teamed up with Adam Poff (guitar) and Ronnie James (vocals), in an effort to write original music that had meaning to them as well as the people that would eventually hear it. The group had a common interest immediately with the style of music they preferred, but a brotherhood that was later discovered proved to be the dangerous ingredient in this explosive group. After several months of nonstop writing and even performing live for the first time, long time friend Shane Lavinder (guitar) was brought in to finish the collaboration of seasoned performers. The band admits it has been somewhat of a blur since.
A new found fan base, a new CD, and a clothing endorsement are just a couple of the accomplishments made in 2004. The band’s debut EP, released in September, has continued to sell many copies. It can be purchased at any Witherspoon concert, but this show could be your last chance before the new year. The biggest news for the band to date took place only two weeks ago. METAL Jeans, a Los Angeles-based clothing company commonly seen advertising in Revolver and Metal Maniac Magazines, chose to endorse Witherspoon. This is even bigger news to the group, as they are the only band currently sponsored by METAL Jeans. This opportunity provides not only clothing for the band, but many free promotions that benefit their fans.
What new milestones will Witherspoon meet and crush in 2005 is still speculation. Until then, strap your helmets on and prepare for the last assault of 2004.

Got real behind this week
I have gotten terribly behind this week. Working 2 jobs is cutting into my concert/beer time. I will try and gather up last minute shows this weekend and post them. Not that it will do me any good as I work - tonight, tomorrow, and Sunday. At least I will have a good meal on Saturday night - even if I won't be able to drink a lot. Check back in an hour or so and there will be shows posted. Sorry. :)

THE BEAST IS RELEASED
The SNAPPER DVD is now available for purchase via PayPal! Product details, pricing, and the PayPal purchase link can be found on the SNAPPER WEBSITE. See for yourself the unbridled, Z-Grade, no budget, comedic horror of the only 'film' based on the legendary giant snapping turtle of Ulanawa Lake! See SNAPPER!
Below is the only known photograph of the Ulanawa Lake creature. It is shown peering out from under a rocky lake bank. The photo was developed from film in a blood encrusted camera found by the lakeshore. It was the last shot taken.
I would like to personally thank everyone who has expressed interest in the project. Whether you bought a DVD, bought a shirt, responded to our earlier free promos, left us a review via the comments or e-mail, wrote about us on your blog/website, forced your friends to watch SNAPPER, or helped to spread the word of our turd in any way at all. Thank you from the bottom of our bowels! May the powers that be bless every last one of you!
A very special thanks goes out to everyone in our small group involved in the production of this abomination! The effort and dedication you have all poured into this project will never be forgotten, nor forgiven. Be proud, your names are etched forever in the annals of cinematic trash!
...And as always, BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU FISH FOR!!!!
JOIN THE WAR PARTY
Long before nu-metal whelps like Slipknot thought starting a 'masked' band would be cool, a group of musicians and artists in Richmond, Virginia had taken theatrical metal to the extreme. The late eighties gave birth to this artistic collective's most successful enterprise. The fine folks at Slave Pit, as the collective was dubbed, formed GWAR.
GWAR combined great metal music with elements of pseudo pornography, fantasy, sci-fi, horror, and comedy into a theatrical performance like no other. Visit the GWAR WEBSITE! Leave your flesh at the door!
GWAR released their new album, WAR PARTY on October 26th, 2004. I picked it up today and was quite happy with it. The musical stylings stay in the vein of their last release, VIOLENCE HAS ARRIVED, which was of course, excellent! The humorous lyrics abound as always, but there are no straight out comedy songs.
I miss the straight out comedy songs, but WAR PARTY does not suffer from their absence. GWAR has released another fine effort. Bless them all!
If GWAR comes anywhere near your town, go see them! Their live show, in all its comedic gory pseudo porno glory, is unlike anything else out there!

On Wednesday night, October 13th, Mayhem Productions, in conjunction with Heather’s Hideaway welcome Dr. Chud’s X-Ward to Johnson City. X-Ward will be joined by opening acts, New Disease, and The Impersonators. Tickets to the show are available at the door only, and are $8. Heather’s Hideaway is located at 235 E. Main St. in downtown Johnson City, TN, near Gatsbys.
Dr. Chud, you know his work, drummer/songwriter for The Misfits (1995-2000) and in that time, he released 3 full-length records on 2 major labels (Geffen & Roadrunner Records), toured the world and U.S. extensively, appeared on numerous syndicated television shows, wrestled for World Championship Wrestling (WCW), contributed to punk rock legend Joey Ramone's only solo album "Don't Worry About Me", appeared in George A. Romero's (director of "Night Of The Living Dead") "Bruiser" motion picture as well as other films such as "Animal Room," "Campfire Stories." and "Big Money Husslas." As well as sewing together the group "Graves." But all that was just a build up, amassing thousands of fans world wide Dr. Chud is writing the next chapter in this tale, DR. CHUD'S X-WARD. A brand new project showcasing Chud's vocal-abilities in an all-out-punk rock-slaughter house.
Launching it's first nationwide tour in 2003, Dr. Chud’s X-Ward proved to everyone why Chud is one of the leaders in horror-punk today. His first full-length Multimedia CD "Diagnosis for Death" released in June of 2004, is sure to become a classic. X-Ward is going to bring all of Dr. Chud's past fans in, as well as the fans who are just now finding out about him via his official website, http://www.drchud.com.
Fans of Elvis, rejoice! Deliverance is here, in the form of opening act for this show, The Impersonators. Formed in Nowhere, TN, The Impersonators are one of the best, as well as one of the most unique Elvis acts around. Not your typical Elvis show, as they put their own flair on things, yet still keep it all centered. The King has just entered the building, and adds an element all their own to this very special show.
What do you get when you cross a love for old school punk, catchy hooks, and 3 talented individuals(whom happen to be family members) who know how to write a song together? The answer: Greeneville, TN’s, New Disease. The band comprised of, Joe, Jody, Wes Tarlton, has been causing quite a bit of a buzz in the local scene since their debut. That buzz has only gotten stronger and stronger in the last few months. If you haven’t see New Disease, come and see what the buzz is about, you’ll thank the powers that be’s for New Disease.

Ansley's last show & Sevendust statement
This is the official statement from Ansley Roberts Promostions....."First of all, I apologize for the delay in an official announcment. My wife and I seperated last week, and I don't have access to a computer right now except for the internet cafe. What else could go wrong this year??
It saddens me to announce that Gatsbyspalooza 2004 will be my last show for a while. I am retiring from national shows, but may continue to have smaller shows at Gatsby's next year. If you have enjoyed or appreciated what we have done for the local area, then please come out to celebrate our going away party. The Breakfast Club and Poptart Monkeys always pack the house, so it should be a great weekend to say "goodbye". And as if we had planned it... Saturday (my last show) is also my birthday. Come help me celebrate my birthday and last show on the same night!!
In regards to Sevendust: AC Entertainment and Sevendust moved the show to Knoxville. I had expressed concern with Sevendust ticket sales to AC Entertainment on a phone call after the Tantric show. I had lost money on my last few shows, and tickets sales for Sevendust were under 40 with less than 10 days to the show. However, after discussing several different options with AC Entertainmnement, I committed to having the show as scheduled out of respect for the local fans and AC Entertainment. AC Entertainment asked me to keep the show, as a cancellation would hurt the local scene and maybe damage my future in the business.
I commited to increasing the advertising for the show by more than $1000, and doing everything that I could to make it work. The promotional strategy worked, as tickets were selling fast on the day the move was announced. I felt confident that the show would now do well, and possibly be profitable. I was also asked by AC Entertainment to send Sevendust $1200 in order to assure the show would happen in Johnson City. I wired them $1200 in ticket money, and the show was cancelled by fax the following day. AC sent the fax to all Dad's CDs locations and also to Z-Rock and K-Rock. I had to learn of the fax from the owner of Dad's CDs. The fax included a reason: "due to Ansley Roberts Promotions being unable to fulfill his contractual obligations."
Let me make this very clear... I would have only been in breach of contract if the band had showed up, and then not been paid in full. By failing to show up, Sevendust is the only party who didn't fulfill their contractual obligations. By asking me to send money on one day, and then cancelling the show on the next... it is easy to prove "intent" in court. There are other legal surprises in store, but I would rather keep those unannounced until later. One thing is for sure, all parties will wish that they had been more professional and couteous.
I was later called by AC Entertainment to advise me that the show was being moved, Sevendust was not returning the deposit, and AC Entertainment was dissolving the relationship between themselves and Ansley Roberts Promotions. It was clear that Sevendust and AC had been negotiating the move for several days, while asking me to keep the show in Johnson City and to send Sevendust money.
We are taking legal action to get everyone's ticket money returned. Until then, please have patience. I do not have anyone's money, Sevendust does. Stay tuned for updates.
I have also learned that AC has contacted Rafters ragerding the Saliva show on Novemember 13. There is also reason to believe that AC is trying to add Sevendust to the show for public relations reasons. If the show happens, you can decide whether or not to support the show after each party has shown their true colors. As for me, I know what decision I would make.
Hopefully I can see everyone this weekend at Gatsby's. The Breakfast Club is Friday, Oct 8, and The Poptart Monkeys are Saturday, Oct 9."
SEVENDUST SHOW MOVED!!!
Sevendust show moved to Blue Cats. Sunday October 3. Tickets are only available at the door. Doors opne at 7pm and tickets are $9.43! w/ Travisty Theory and ONE. Not sure if Soundevice is still playing or not.
Ansley is preparing a statement...that will be shared with the people of the Tri-Cities area.
Gordon Souley’s Birthday Bash This Saturday at Cahootenanny’s
When: Saturday, October 2nd
Where: Cahootenanny’s, Walnut St., Johnson City, TN
Who: Third Leg and New Disease
Time: 10:30
Cost: $3
(Johnson City, TN) Cahootenanny’s presents a dynamic twin bill this Saturday, October 2nd with Third Leg and New Disease. A special night of music starting at 10:30 and cost of admission is $3. 18 and over are permitted with photo I.D.
In case you haven’t heard, punk rock is alive and well in Tennessee. Coming off a year of solid playing and touring, Third Leg is back in Johnson City for the first time since July. The band traveled to New York City and all points in between, taking their music and revival-like stage show on the road. What did the band learn from their travels?
"We can rock anybody, anywhere," remarked lead singer, Gordon Souley, via phone from his Johnson City home. "We played to a lot of different kinds of people in a lot of different kinds of places. We played to a mostly middle-aged black and Hispanic crowd in Brooklyn and we played to an all ages punk crowd in Westchester. Each town and crowd was unique, but everybody seemed to know and get into where we were coming from. We met a lot of good people and were able to get out a lot of CD’s. I think it paid off to go. We have definitely set a foundation to go back. I think people appreciate that we are a rock and roll band."
Call it punk, alternative, or whatever label that one may put on it, Third Leg is true, get up and have a good time, knock down the establishment, rock and roll. Along with several songs with themes such as mental illness, domestic abuse and politics, Third leg can’t hide the religious overtones set mainly by Souley, but respected by his bandmates.
"My band understands Souley and I am careful with what I say and do. I do not mean to make fun of Christianity by no means. It is a big part of my life and I feel I can express it in a way that most people can relate too and feel good about. We are not a Christian rock band and we do not try to pretend that we are. I think people see where we are coming from and regardless, I feel the message is sincere and leaves a good impression on people. People refer to me as the Reverend Souley, but I would never call myself by that title. It does not make me mad, it is all in fun. If the message can make people at least stop and think for a moment, whether it be our government, religion, whatever, at least they are thinking and making up there own minds."
Saturday’s show will be a special night for Gordon and he has put himself on a birthday party to celebrate what he calls one more year into the oblivion and the unknown. He chose the opening band, New Disease, personally to help him celebrate the day in style.
"New Disease is possibly my favorite band on any level right now," said Souley. "I feel that they really have a chance to make it. They are young, very talented and they work hard. You can not help but have a good time when you are watching them. They are all good guys. I got to see them grow up and it does not surprise me to see how talented they have turned out."
Souley is referring to brothers Joe and Wes Tarleton of New Disease, sons of Scullsoup drummer, Chris "Tiretool" Tarleton. Their cousin, Jody Tarlton, on guitar and lead vocals fronts new Disease.
"I know that myself, as well as the rest of the Leg are pumped to be back home to play for our friends. We are looking forward to meeting a lot of knew people, wherever theroad takes us."
For more info on Third Leg visit http://www.thirdleg.iwarp.com. Cahootenanny’s located on Walnut Street in Johnson City close to campus.

Bristol festival runs deep with eclectic music talent
By Jim McGuinness @ Go Tricities
Their names aren’t familiar to commercial radio listeners.
But the artists scheduled to appear at this weekend’s Rhythm & Roots Reunion certainly aren’t short on talent.
In fact, many of them are among the most respected on the American roots music scene. And with tickets priced at just $10 a day, Rhythm & Roots is the perfect opportunity for frustrated radio listeners to widen their musical horizons.
Spread over three outdoor stages, five indoor venues and five acoustic-jam stages along State Street, the festival will play host to more than 100 acts.
While other events bring in performers with a larger national following, Rhythm & Roots is content booking the kind of old-time, blues, gospel, bluegrass and country acts that uphold our region’s rich musical legacy.
“I think the acts we have this year are right up our alley,” said festival director Saundra Reynolds. “Our goal is high-quality music. We book people who fit Bristol, not people who are popular because they’re getting played on Country Music Television.”
Among the more celebrated names on this year’s festival roster are Rhonda Vincent, Leftover Salmon, Jim Lauderdale, Gillian Welch, Corey Harris, Scott Miller, Chuck Brodsky and a host of other names that will be familiar to listeners of radio stations like WETS-FM in Johnson City and WNCW-FM in Springdale, N.C. – public stations whose playlists tend to be more progressive than their commercial radio counterparts...

Career Suicide and a bit of an Explanation
The week of Lennon continues with a rare repeat of a Team Rock Post. The following post was first written on December 19, 2003 and concerns Lennon's second CD, Career Suicide. Now if you have read the post below (which is also on Tricities.com and in the hard copy of the Loafer this week.) you are saying, "Wait a minute! There was no mention of a second CD!" and you would be correct. The reason I didn't include it in the article is because, well, two reasons. 1st to be honest, I forgot about it when I was writing the article and, second, it is a CD that was not nationally released. This CD, initially was only offered on her web site Lennon Online but it has since been added to music web sites (CD Now) or at least will be available on Sept 7.
This CD is just Lennon and her piano. It is how she writes and composes new songs in their original form. They are then taken to the studio where they work them into full band format. The night this arrived I had been out shopping during the Christmas rush and these were my thoughts immediatly after hearing this tremendous CD.
Lennon and Career Suicide
My copy of Lennon's new CD (only available online (Lennon Online) or at a live show) was waiting on me when I arrived home today. It could not have come at a better time as I was all stressed out after a long evening of Christmas shopping.
Where to start about this CD?
I read her dedication as the first song, Jacob, was starting. - It pulled me heart first into the CD.
This is for those who never sleep
Who spend their nights contemplating why the day must come
This for those who never fall in love
Only living for what had been and will never be again,
This is for thos who I see more of their back then their face
For they enter with no words but when they're gone you know,
This is for you. --- Lennon Murphy
The CD is acoustic driven with only Lennon and her piano until the last song but we will be there in a moment.. The song list is a mixture of a five older songs off her first CD 5:30 Saturday Morning: I Hear, Couldn't Breathe, Brake Of Your Car, Morning, and Asking You and five new songs: Jacob, What You're Saying, Goodbye, Main Gravel Road, and And You. The already powerful songs are stepped up a notch in intensity as the songs are presented as she originally wrote and performed the songs. The new songs are equally as intense and powerful. The beautiful lyrics combined with the rich and crisp piano spear your heart and intertwine with your soul.
The last song, Asking You starts out a cappella and ends with string violins. Echoes (especially in Pro Logic mode) at the beginning provide a great backdrop until the string violins accompany her until the end. Her voice never wavers and only proves further how beautiful she sings (and is not bad on the piano either). I highly recommend this CD. Go to Lennon Online and buy it! She signs and mails it personally!

Lennon Murphy’s Long Awaited Return to Johnson City
Thursday Aug 19th @ Downtown Rafters
By Xyon
On Thursday August 19 Lennon Murphy makes her long awaited return to Johnson City. After a three year absence, the 21 year old singer will be appearing for one night only at Downtown Rafters with Ligion, and local favorites Blind Sight and AntiTrust.
The last time Lennon played Johnson City, she was touring under the Arista label in support of her first album, 5:30 Saturday Morning. This time she will be supporting her much anticipated (and long overdue) second album, I Am. Unlike last time however, she is no longer with Arista and is touring on her own. She has had some help from fellow artists as she has opened for bands like Alice Cooper, The Cult, Drowning Pool, Otep, and Mushroomhead and booking headline dates in between these shows. Lennon even toured the entire United States with no support from the industry and headlined most of these shows. She is currently coming off the Warp Tour and is playing Johnson City before she starts touring with Heart. Yes, I said Heart.
For her second Album, I Am, Lennon has hooked up with famed Kid Rock Producer, Al Sutton, in Orlando, FL and decided to record and distribute the album herself. “I wanted a career as a rock act, an album I could be proud of,” she says, “staying with Arista I really didn’t see that happening.” Lennon continues, “In an industry where you have four weeks to hit and then move on to the next thing, a career is the last think corporate America is considering. By putting this album out through my own company, I want to give myself the chance of still being around in 10 years,”
Lennon has faced her share of problems on her career ladder. Her first album debut on the ill-fated September 11, 2001, internal problems led to her release from Arista Records, and her successful but tough, two year custody battle for her younger sister. Lennon has fought through it all and has played everything from small clubs to large venues and after over 250 shows later still says, “playing live is still my one true love.”
This is an all ages show with under 18 requiring an adult escort and is sponsored in part by Ace High Tatoo and Fuzzyholes Showbar. Tickets are $12 and can be bought before the show at DAD’S CDs with doors opening the night of the show at 7pm.. Information can also be found on the web at Team Rock (http://teamrock.blogspot.com), a website devoted to the promotion of local and regional shows in and around the Tri-Cities. More information is available from the Lennon Website at www.lennononline.com. This is definitely a show not to miss.
From self-proclamations in such songs as “Rain” and “Nothing Out of Me,” one can’t ignore the lies Lennon so candidly preaches about or the truth so many hide. A more guitar driven album that the first, “Down the Line” and “Reason” still incorporate haunting loops of industrial heritage; as well as, remaining a storyteller in “Another for Another.” – From her website talking about the forthcoming album “I Am.”
Saliva had to Reschedule but Earshot Still Rocked JC
Fans were disappointed because Saliva had to reschedule their return appearance because of truck/trailer problems, however that didn't stop them from coming out to see Earshot, Blind Sight, and last minute Knoxvile band, 10 Years. It also helped that everybody who bought advance tickets (some 600+) were able to keep their tickets and use them for Saliva's return in November. 10 Years, who have played at Blue Cats in Knoxvile, started the evening and weren't bad, not bad at all. Blind Sight took the stage next and put on their normal kick @ss show. These guys are going somewhere and probably soon. Earshot played an extended set as they were now the headlining band and they proved that they could headline any venue. Tickets the day of the show were lowered to $10 and both WRZK and ZROCK were on hand. Again thanks go out to Ansley Roberts and Downtown Rafters for still pulling off a successful show.
Now let's all do it again Thursday as Lennon Murphy and her band will be playing Rafters with Blind Sight, AntiTrust, and special guest Ligion. Doors open at 7pm and ticket prices are only $12 (that's $3 a band!). You can buy advance tickets at DADS CD and you can find more information about Lennon at Lennon Online.

Graduation Weekend With Saliva at Downtown Rafters
Sorry about not posting any shows for this week. I have been extremely busy finishing my last sememster as an undergraduate and getting ready for the Lennon show next week. Team Rock is helping Downtown Rafters promote this show by making 150 Lennon Sample CDs to be given out to the first 150 people in the building at the SALIVA SHOW THIS SUNDAY NIGHT. Saliva, Earshot, and Blind Sight will be playing at Downtown Rafters on Sunday.
These Cds come complete with 4 different color labels and consist of 4 Lennon Songs, 1 song from Blind Sight, and 1 song from AntiTrust. The CD also has 2 videos of Lennon live in concert to be played with Window Media Player.
I had to learn how to mix the music and data and the first track on the CD is data (which the audio CD players will pick up). Track 2 starts the songs to listen so if you are lucky enough to pick up a CD, remember to start it on track 2 when you play it in your car. I have since learned how to make it better, but it was too late for this show. At least they are free! So get to the Saliva Show early and pick you up one!
I will be partying somewhere all weekend as I have now graduated ETSU. I will have stuff up for next week. Take care and be safe this weekend. If you see me out, take care of me too 'cause I will need it. :)
Thanks go out to Ansley Roberts for bringing Saliva back to Johnson City!

Xyon is recovering from 'The River'
Xyon made it home sometime after 3pm Sunday. He left the Rockin' on the River festival before all the bands played (Sunday was a hard day) and regrets missing AntiTrust (Sorry Guys!). Upon returning home, he promptly fell in a long, deep sleep for 3 hours. When he awoke he could barely walk or talk. After a night of letting the phone ring (because he couldn't talk) and falling back to sleep on the couch, he barely made it to work this morning. He is currently recovering and will have the local music schedule up for this weekend soon. He reports a terrific time at the festival and reported that the big surprise was Monsters of Japan. He said that he had wanted to see these guys and gal for awhile and was suprised when they started the show on Saturday morning at 11am. They have got a great sound and the stage show is 'not bad either.' These guys (and gal) from Asheville should be on everyone list of bands not to miss. He also said that he planned on seeing their full show at Ireson's Pub this Friday (Aug 6). He mentioned that he would report more as he felt better.
Oh, I about forgot to mention that he repoted that all the bands he saw did great and downBleed, Cauda, Blindsight, Bishop Stone, 5'Mullet, Goodspeed, Project Downfall, Witherspoon, SkullSoup, Third Leg, and Moonshine Cherries were some of his favorite shows that he could "remember." 2004 Edgies Acoustic Performances on DVD
As JT mentioned on the Monday Night Edge, there is a DVD of the acoustic sets from downBleeed, Goodspeed, and Blindsight. If you are interested in obtaining a copy - leave a comment at the end of this posting or email to Xyon - at teamrock2004@yahoo.com. Price of the DVD is $7.
Also of note, there is a new version of the DVD completed. The first version that I got out as fast as I could was a basic version with all the performances. The new edition is spruced up a little more with the appropriate credit where credit is due. I prefer the second edition over the first. All I have left to do is make a DVD label.
So, if you are interested...email me at the link to the right or leave a comment here (if you comment here, leave an email address).

Rocking it at the Edgies - Acoustic Style
The good people over at WRZK and Stephanie Bullock over at Tricites.com made it possible for me to join the bands last night at the 2nd annual Edgie awards. The Sophisticated Otter's back room was full of bands hoping to walk away the coveted Edgy award given to mainly local bands with a regional category thrown in to hopefully keep regional artists coming through our area.
The evening started off with a bang as downBleed was the first acoustic band of the evening. They played a three song melody that was a bit different (especially with Doug and his finely tuned skull shaker) but it still came off quite good. Goodspeed (crazy fuckers! :) ) and Blindsight (always good seeing those guys) also did acoustic sets that sounded tremendous.
Goodspeed was the big winner with 3 awards (Best Pop/Rock Performance, Best Male Vocalist, and Best Live Performance), Blindsight with 2 (Best Metal/Alternative Performance and Artist of the Year), with Omega Tribe picking up Album of the Year, Mia Richards for Best Female Performance, and regional artist went to Swift.
I had a blast last night recording the performances and they turned out better than I expected with only the digital camcorder's speaker to pick up the performances - You should start seeing these around the web (here, on the local bands sites, and possibly even on WRZK.)
Thanks again to JT, Stephanie Bullock at Tricities.com, downBleed, and all the bands for making it really a great evening.

Ansley Roberts Promotions and Bud "True Music" present: The Breakfast Club
Admission is only $8, show starts at 10:30.
After an 8-month absence, The Breakfast Club returns to the Tri-cities with local fans quickly losing patience regarding the long hiatis. Gatsby's has reported many calls from fans asking when the band would be playing again. The decision to take a long break was not made by the Breakfast Club, but by local promoter Ansley Roberts. "I think every great thing needs to be missed in order to be fully appreciated", says Roberts.
The Breakfast Club has been a local favorite for several years, as the band has a huge fan base consisting of ages 21-70. The Breakfast Club plays exclusively music from the '80s, and shows no shame in celebrating the decade of parachute pants, hairspray, and MTV.
The backbone of the band, keyboardist Mike Mundy, returns with possibly the best line-up since the Breakfast Club's peak in popularity in the mid '90s. The band consists of Scottish bassist/vocalist, Steve Campbell;
new drummer John Langdon, along with a former superstar of The Breakfast Club that is currently drawing huge audiences since his surprise return.

Breaking News From Eligah Strange
Jeff Cross, of Eligah Strange, brought his daughter to our family 4th of July picnic Sunday evening. He informed me that Eligah Strange has started playing together again. They are resuming work on their 3rd Album - "Medicine Head." Having recorded 2 songs already they hope to have 10+ songs on the new album. From what I understand, they will not be as frequent on the scene as they used to be, but at least they will be playing it again. Keep a look out for future updates.

The Upcoming Tour of 2004
by Xyon
Mayhem Productions along with Utterpunk.com are proud to present The Upcoming Tour of 2004 featuring Allergic to Bullshit (regional), Malachi Constant, Doozer, Ambry, The Modern Day Saint, and Third Leg. The venue for this stellar show will be Heather’s Hideaway, the date is Friday July 2nd, and cover will be $6.00. This is an 18 and over show with proper ID required at the door.
The first band of the night will be Allergic to Bullshit. They are out of Norton Virginia and are well known on the punk scene.
The next band up is Malachi Constant. The bands web site was down, but I found that they are out of West Springfield and that they play the music that they enjoy. After listening to a couple of downloads, the music that “they enjoy” is real good punk. Like the “Violent Femmes” meeting “The Dead Kennedy’s,” their music would speed up to a punk frenzy and slow down, just as fast, to quick chords on the guitar with light vocals.
The third band will be Doozer out of Camden, Connecticut. Doozer has a more traditional, straight punk sound. From the songs I sampled, their songs range from fast (but not so furious) to slower and hypnotic. The lead singer has a good voice and uses it in the popular style of “whining,” but you won’t be whining about this band after you see them. They will rock the punk out of Johnson City.
Fourth up is Ambry.. They have a straight punk sound that leans Experimental Rock (with a bit of hardcore punk thrown in for good measure.). As I was listening to this five member band out of Haverhill, Massachusetts I was thinking – they sound like Green Day before they got popular, great sound but with a raw edge that make them stand out.
Fifth will be The Modern Saint. The Modern Day Saint teamed up with Sonny to release their first CD, ‘Tennessee Isn’t Too Far Away’ a few months ago and is already working on their next CD, ‘(REVERSE) ALCHEMY’ due out this winter. A review of their album says, “They combine all the greatest elements of bands such as Dashboard Confessional, Finch, Saves the Day, The Startling Line and Taking Back Sunday. Their passion for playing enriches the listener’s experience by bringing out their genuine feelings through the music and lyrics. Sonny contributes the last three tracks to the CD.” After sampling their music, I’d say that description fits and is further added by saying, “When you attend a Modern Day Saint show you can expect to feel the music, to feel the angst, to feel the anger of each song, getting the distinct feeling it is being played as if it was meant to be the last song they ever played. This sound can only be described as the perfect marriage of sonic chaos and pop sensibility combined with various influences from the punk, and hardcore.”
Last up will be Johnson City’s own, Third Leg. Third Leg has re-ignited the punk scene in Johnson City so it is fitting that they are closing this amazing show. This is a must see live performance.
A few quotes already out there about Third Leg:
“Third leg has a nice interesting sound, rather different, a bit old school hardcore, a bit melodic with some really nice guitar work, vocals, hell even the drums kick my ass…” Freakshow - Art and Music Zine (Jan 2003).
"The Third Leg has a live show not to be missed!" WRZK FM- Monday Night Edge
‘Nuff Said. Be there, but you had better buy your ticket early, there are only 39 tickets left as of Monday, June 28. Tickets can be bought in advance at Heather’s HideAway.
