JANUARY

Meaning "Janus's Month": Janus is the Roman god of gates and doorways, depicted with two faces looking in opposite directions. His festival month is January. Januarius had 29 days, until Julius when it became 31 days long. Middle English Januarie, Latin Januarius "of Janus", Latin Janu(s) "Janus" + -arius "ary (pertaining to)", Latin Januarius mensis "month of Janus".

Lennon and Career Suicide

My copy of Lennon's new CD (only available online (Lennon Online) or at a live show) was waiting on me when I arrived home today. It could not have come at a better time as I was all stressed out after a long evening of Christmas shopping.

Where to start about this CD?

I read her dedication as the first song, Jacob, was starting. - It pulled me heart first into the CD.

This is for those who never sleep
Who spend their nights contemplating why the day must come
This for those who never fall in love
Only living for what had been and will never be again,
This is for those who I see more of their back then their face
For they enter with no words but when they're gone you know,
This is for you.
--- Lennon Murphy

The CD is acoustic driven with only Lennon and her piano until the last song but we will be there in a moment.. The song list is a mixture of a five older songs off her first CD 5:30 Saturday Morning: I Hear, Couldn't Breathe, Brake Of Your Car, Morning, and Asking You and five new songs: Jacob, What You're Saying, Goodbye, Main Gravel Road, and And You. The already powerful songs are stepped up a notch in intensity as the songs are presented as she originally wrote and performed the songs. The new songs are equally as intense and powerful. The beautiful lyrics combined with the rich and crisp piano spear your heart and intertwine with your soul.

The last song, Asking You starts out a cappella and ends with string violins. Echoes (especially in Pro Logic mode) at the beginning provide a great backdrop until the string violins accompany her until the end. Her voice never wavers and only proves further how beautiful she sings (and is not bad on the piano either). I highly recommend this CD. Go to Lennon Online and buy it! She signs and mails it personally!

Toys For Tots Metal Blitzkrieg Set For Rafters Dec. 20

Metal fans of all ages are invited to come out to the Toys For Tots Metal Blitzkrieg at Rafters on Saturday night December 20. It will be a night to remember as 5 local metal bands lend their talent to bring a wonderful Christmas to children in need.

Great local bands Dank, Evixion, Blindsight, Omega Tribe, and downBleed rise to the occasion to share the joy of Christmas in their own style of metal madness. The cover is $7 or an unwrapped toy of equal or greater value. All proceeds at the door will be turned over to a representative of the Marine Corps who will collect the money and toys to make a child’s Christmas that much better.

If you had planned to give this year – this is a no lose situation. You get the satisfaction of helping someone in need and receive a killer concert for your efforts!

The order the bands will play will be determined the night of the show. Doors open at 7:30 and the first band will go on shortly thereafter. Toys For Tots Metal Blitzkrieg is an all age show. Downtown Rafters. 410 E. State of Franklin Rd. Johnson City TN 423-232-6520.

VIVA DEL SANTO!!!!!

While in Knoxville this weekend I was able to attend the SOUTHERN CULTURE ON THE SKIDS show at BLUE CATS. I first saw these guys way back in '93 at ROCKIN' ON THE RIVER. They blew me away then and have never failed since. It turned out to be Chris 'Cousin Crispy' Bess' last show and I was glad to be in attendance for the momentous occasion. SCOTS have gained national exposure over the years having been featured on soundtracks such as I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER and BEAVIS AND BUTT-HEAD DO AMERICA. Their video for CAMEL WALK also saw heavy rotation on MTV a few years ago. Friday night's show was a blast and all the crowd pleasers were played - KING OF THE MOUNTAIN, LIQUORED UP AND LACQUERED DOWN, DADDY WAS A PREACHER MAMA WAS A GO-GO GIRL, and HOUSE OF BAMBOO to name a few. The raucous set ended with EIGHT PIECE BOX and a personal favorite, VIVA DEL SANTO. The mandatory chicken hurling dancers were onstage, of course. Any chance to see this band should be taken! Here are some regional opportunities...

More on Erin McKeown

From the Imperfectly.com page featuring Ms. McKeown...

Erin McKeown is a folksinger / songwriter originally from Fredericksburg, Va. her music career got started when in 1995 she was named a semi-finalist by the songwriters' association of Washington DC in their mid-Atlantic song contest for the modern rock/alternative category. She subsequently started her own record label, TVP records. Through TVP, she has released a self-titled debut, Monday morning cold, and her latest, distillation (now re-released on signature sounds).

Erin recently completed an Ethnomusicology degree at brown university. She has played with such artists as Dar Williams, Andy Stochansky, Pamela Means, the Nields, Ani Difranco, and Melissa Ferrick. She was also featured as part of the "Voices on the Verge" series in the New England area (with fellow folk artists Jess Klein, Rose Polenzani, and Beth Amsel).

I am going to the show in Asheville on Dec 8 at the Orange Peel. I highly recommend this show, as there aren't too many opportunities like this if you like folk/funk with a twist of spunk for good measure.

I am liking this stuff more and more.

Bio from homepage:

25-year-old Erin McKeown is a rare find.

While the category of singer/songwriter continues to wander down the path of certain homogeneity and female artists become, by and large, either Britney/Christina knock-offs or dubiously tortured souls, Erin offers something that threatens to move the goalposts.

As long as music fans continue to yearn for the acerbic wit of Randy Newman, the innovative stylings of Bjork and Liz Phair, and the intricate arrangements of Elvis Costello, Erin's latest and third full-length record, "Grand" will prove necessity in any music lover's collection.

7 MARY 3...ANYTHING BUT CUMBERSOME

Wow, what a damn fine rock'n'roll show at The Otter last night! ROB RUSSELL scorched up the stage and really got the crowd going. The fervor even erupted into a small skirmish at the front right of the stage. Our own XYON even got into the battle while performing security duties at the show. After the incident was settled and the offender removed, RUSSELL AND THE SORE LOSERS continued to smoke the stage, paving the way for the coming onslaught of SEVEN MARY THREE. I didn't know much of 7M3's music, but their amazing set turned me into an instant fan. I loved screaming along to the few songs I knew as well as being educated in their other great music. The best moment of all is when 7M3 burst into an amazing cover of MOTORHEAD's 'ACE OF SPADES'. I never thought I'd hear that one, especially at The Otter of all places. It was great seeing other folks with fists in the air screaming along to that great rock anthem. After that, there was no question about 7M3...they truly kicked ass! It was great hanging out with Anthony and Jeremy from TRIBUS as well. Yes Jeremy, I would go to Checkoslovakia in a heartbeat...but only if I could get a decent piece of American cheese without having to use the force! You guys were hilarious at the MID-CITY GRILL. Truely 'A Perfect Circle'

What a kick @ss show! I had heard the buzz about this band for many months, but never checked them out. To show you how much in the dark I was about them, I just recently found out that the lead singer for Tool was their lead singer. I really fell behind on this one. Hell, the other guys were/are in great bands too.

So 2 days ago Rock calls me up and says, "What are you doing Thursday night?"

I reply, "Just the normal stuff. After work I am heading to work over at college, then try and catch up on my school work while trying to find time to sleep somewhere before work on Friday..."

He says, "So I guess you don't want to go see 'A Perfect Circle' Thursday night."

ME: "Well, I really can't afford it"

HIM: "Oh, I just won tickets and backstage passes off the radio"

ME: "Shit! Really? ok then..."

Great show - One of the best I have seen.

Thanks Rock. That was tremendously cool.

THE NICKEL CREEK SHOW

I first saw NICKEL CREEK at last year's BLUE PLUM FESTIVAL for free. They put on a great, energetic, fun show that prompted me to buy their debut album as well as the follow up THIS SIDE. When I heard they were coming back, I couldn't wait to see them. I was more than willing to pay the 25.00 ticket price, considering it had been a free show the last time. I entered RAFTER'S last night and anxiously waited for the show to begin. Two songs into the show, I noticed things were quite different this time around. The fun crowd from last year had been replaced by a horde of uptight whiteys from parts unknown. Any crowd noise that wasn't a direct worshipping of the band was vehemently 'shushed' and commented on by the odd crowd. Hello, this is a bar, this is a concert...Extraneous noise is normal. It didn't help that NC kept playing low-key, soft-toned numbers. I started finding the 'Shhh's and 'Shut ups' more distracting than the noise it was intended to subdue. Who the hell wants to stand in silence at a concert? I wasn't one of the noise makers, but I found the 'respectful' crowd to be far more annoying. The constant glares from craned necks, the chastising, and the constant 'shhhh' made it impossible for me to even enjoy the show. I retreated into the back where I spoke with Ansley a bit about how the show was going. It didn't surprise me when he told me people had complained because there weren't seats. I returned to the crowd for the last couple of songs, only to hear some guy get told to 'shut up' because he cheered a song...geez! I then noticed something even more disturbing. Not only was the crowd raining on the parade, even the chubby little guitarist began casting hateful glances and stares at people who cheered a bit loud. I was completely disgusted by now, but hoped the encore would be a nice upbeat and fast one. WRONG! The guitarist announced they were going to play some ELLIOT SMITH tunes as a tribute to his passing. We were then informed that it would be acoustic, we should be quiet, and any "obnoxiously drunk" people needed "to make their way out". Wow...This didn't apply to me, but I still found it pretty wretched. My advice for Ansley, should he bring them back, would be to sell a limited amount of tickets for 50 bucks a pop and have it at the DOWN HOME - a place where a coffee house attitude and dickheads such as were in that crowd are held in high regard. I still love my NICKEL CREEK CD's...But I will never pay a nickel to see them again!

Demolition Doll Rods

This from the BUZZ:
On Thursday Nov. 06, The Indy Gentlemen present Detroit's Demolition Doll Rods at A Hideaway. Not familiar with the 'Dolls? Here's what SPIN magazine had to say:
"According to the sage female hosts of The View, sex is back and Detroit's Demolition Doll Rods are "bout it". The trio perform near-naked, save for the occasional pasty, hubcap, dog biscuit, Fudgesicle, or whatever else they can get to stick to their genitals. But don't mistake their exhibitionism for mere shock-rock novelty; the band's rockabilly-flavored garage-punk sound lends weight to their super sexed white-trash antics".

FREE SHOW AT THE OTTER

Gus Black Tuesday night(10-14-03) at the Otter (FREE)

Interview with LA Daily News - June 18, 2003
Gus Black Does Sabbath
by Sandra Barrera

When he was a teenager, Gus Black (his wife's surname) went through a "full-on" heavy-metal faze.

"Who didn't?" says the singer-songwriter, who pays homage to,among other influences, his heavy-metal roots in the album "Uncivilized Love," with a melancholy take on Black Sabbath's "Paranoid."

The song finds Black vocalizing in a near whisper over a jangly guitar and a depressed beat -- proof that his head-banger days still linger.

According to Black, his last cover was Blue Oyster Cult's "(Don't Fear) the Reaper" for "Scream," the soundtrack to the 1996 teen horror flick.

"I've always tried to take a heavier song and bring it into this mellow universe," he says. "And, 'Paranoid' was the first song I ever learned how to play on guitar."

Black (born Gus Penaloza) is a Los Angeles native who's wanted to be a singer-songwriter since the age of 5, although it took some experimenting with other styles of music before he actually became one.

Like many teens, he played in bands, going from metal to punk.

Then, he says, he bought his first acoustic guitar.

"It was really beat up," says Black of the 1970s Gibson J-200 that he later refurbished and still plays. "It brought me back to Cat Stevens and ... Jim Croce, all this great music I listened to when I was a kid. That's when I really started writing songs."

He was working under the name Gus when, in 1996, he put out the four-song cassette "C-Sides" on the AlamoSounds label, followed by his self-titled full-length debut. "Word of Mouth," his 1999 release, was his last for the now-defunct label.

By 2001, he was on the British indie label Wild Abandon and recording under the name Gus Black. He released "Uncivilized Love" the following year.

A newer incarnation of the album was put out last month by the U.S.-based Immergent Records. Amazon.com has since praised the release as "inviting musical simplicity, wed to a complex -- and conflicted -- world view," and KCRW-FM's Nic Harcourt, a longtime supporter of Black's music, included "Uncivilized Love" in his picks of this month's top 10 CDs.

It was while he was putting the finishing touches on the album that Black began slowly strumming out the chords to "Paranoid" on the guitar. "It just felt really good," he recalls, saying he decided to include it on his haunting, pop-inspired set. "It's like this beautiful, melancholy, sad singer-songwriter song. Who knew that Ozzy was the sensitive poet?"

Should be a good show.....

STONE DEAF FOREVER RELEASED

IT'S OUT!!!!! MOTORHEAD's career spanning box set - STONE DEAF FOREVER - "This is the first fully comprehensive box set collection covering Motörhead’s entire career from 1975-2002. The first box set to be issued with full band approval. The track list was compiled in association with the band and fan club. It contains a new 12,000 word essay by Classic Rock editor and famed heavy metal journalist Mick Wall. It also features many rare recordings of Motörhead classics including 19 previously unreleased tracks. It contains a lavish, 60 page booklet featuring rare and unpublished photos and memorabilia from the motörarchives. The set contains a full colour replica tour poster and a Motörhead button. The cover art features a newly commissioned painting by long time motörhead artist Joe Petagno." - amazon.com editorial.

This is a must have for any TRUE fan of hard rock/metal/punk/hardcore! For the uneducated 'hardcore' fanboys that naysay against the 'HEAD, an amazon.com reviewer once stated - "there is mere heavy metal and there is Motorhead. If you don't know the difference, you should probably be lining up for the new Godsmack album." - no truer words have ever been spoken! Stay clean, live to win, stay outta' jail, and feel no remorse!!!!!

TRIBUS @ CAHOOTENANNY'S

I went to CAHOOTENANNY'S (Old Vito's) last night to ckeck out the TRIBUS show. Opening act CAUDA sounded like some odd cross between TOOL and NICKELBACK...not really my thing. TRIBUS then took the stage. I had seen them once before at THE RAMBIS, but had reserved judgement considering the poor acoustics at that 'venue'. TRIBUS really impressed me last night and drew a good crowd. ROCK had compared them to an early PEARL JAM in a prior post, but I didn't really hear that. I feel TRIBUS has more of a hard rock sound with its roots planted firmly in southern rock...a kind of MOLLY HATCHET meets SEVEN MARY THREE sort of thing. However you quantify it, it's a great sound that gets you moving. Great job guys and thanks for the shirt!

...oh yeah, CAHOOTENANNY'S has a freaking oxygen bar...it's VITO's without the occasional violence...props to PIKE.
