REX'S TOP 5 OF 2003

Everyone loves some music! With 2003 behind us, I wanted to take a second to list my top five favorites, in no particular order, from the past year. I would love to hear everyone else's 'top five'. Here we go...

AFI - Sing the Sorrow

In an age of pitiful pop-punk bands, AFI took all the kiddies to school with this heartfelt, uncompromising treatise on what punk/goth rock is supposed to express. This album is absolutely perfect, a shining beacon of truth in a genre whose power has been so deeply dilluted by three chord brats.

IRON MAIDEN - Dance of Death

Bruce is back again for this great follow up to the massively successful Brave New World. Tales of WWI, the Cathars, and the supernatural ensue...'nuff said!

THE DARKNESS - Permission to Land

Men What Do Rock have taken the swagger of Bon Scott era AC/DC, the melodic riffs of THIN LIZZY, and added one of the most entertaining vocalists in years (think Freddie Mercury meets Robert Smith) and recorded the best damn retro-rock album ever! After tons of horrible retro bands - The Hives, The Vines, Jet, etc. - it is miraculous that someone finally got it right. It must be heard to be believed!

DAVE BROCKIE EXPERIENCE - Songs for the Wrong

Three guys from GWAR form a punk band with song titles like Should the Ugly Girl Blow Me, Hard for a Tard, March of the Faggot Soldiers, and I Wanna be a Squirrel. What more could you ask for? Go buy it!

AMERICAN HI FI - The Art of Losing

Stacey Jones is super pissed at all the bitches in his life. Nobody writes the 'pissed of at bitches' songs quite like Stacy. Grab the disc and scream along...we've all been there...let it out.

Wilhelm Scream to Play Heather's Hideaway

From FTK Entertainment

Tuesday night, February 3rd, FTK Entertainment in conjunction with Heather's Hideaway proudly presents Nitro Records recoring artists, A Wilhelm Scream. Also appearing will be special guest opening acts, regional favorites Blitzkid, and local favorites, The Transoms. The show will start at 9:30 p.m., with doors opening at 8:00 p.m. The cost of admission is $5, and the show is open for anyone ages 18 and up, with those over 21, being able to enjoy some great beer specials.

A Wilhelm Scream, are one of the few punk bands to make their way out of their homestate of Maryland to get national recognition.. Formerly known as Smackin' Isaish, and gaining quite an established following, they were quickly signed to Jumpstart Records. From here, they went through a few small line-up changes, a name change to A Wilhelm Scream, and got a recording contract with long-time punk label, Nitro Records. Anyone and everyone in the punk scene is familiar with Nitro Records, and some of their other signings, such as: Rufio, TSOL, and theSTART. Now, the time has come for them to bring their sound to Johnson City.

Alongside of A Wilhelm Scream, and hailing from Bluefield, VA, Blitzkid has been a long time staple in the regional punk scene. Comprised of: T.B. Monstrosity (Guitar/Vokills), Argyle Goolsby (Bass/Vokills), Gilby Deviant (Guitar), and Billy Bones (Drums), Blitzkid meshes punk with a hint of metal to a create a great, catchy sound. Signed to Antidote Records, and having just released their newest CD, Trace of A Stranger, this past August, Blitzkid are quickly gaining national notoriety, in such magazines as Rue Morgue, which recently reviewed their latest release.

From Bristol, VA, comes a new twist on the rock sound, the Transoms. With catchy hooks, and an original sound, The Transoms, have one of the best rock sounds in the local scene. Still fairly young, to the local scene, come see why this band is making waves in the area, and why the buzz is growing quickly.

Heather's Hideaway is located at 235 E. Main St. in Johnson City, TN. The show will start at 9:30, and their will be drink specials all night. Admission is only $5.00, for what is sure to be a great night of live music.

A MESSAGE FROM NEVER BEFORE

This Friday night (January 16th), Downtown Rafters and
Jagermeister present Adrenokrome, Never Before, and
Bullrush. The show starts at 10:00pm.

I don't know a lot about Adrenokrome and Bullrush, but
I'd like to tell you all a bit about my band, Never
Before. I can definitely say that for this area,
we're probably one of the most original-sounding bands
around. Each of us draw from our own individual
influences, ranging from 80's guitar rock to early
90's grunge to emotional gothic metal.

Formed in the spring of 2003 on a whim, the band
originally consisted of Lee on vocals, Chraw on
guitar, Adam on bass, and Bruce on drums. After a few
months and many gigs, Adam and Bruce abruptly left the
band in mid-summer. I joined as the new drummer in
early August, and Josh joined as the new bassist in
September. Since then, we've played several gigs at
Rafters with various bands from the area.

Since labels are a necessary evil, I suppose the best
one for us would be "melodic metal". We're heavy, but
without all the incoherent screaming. We've been
described as a combination of Type-O Negative and
Nirvana, but with loads of badass 80's-style guitar
solos. It's an interesting mixture, to say the least.

I hope to see a decent turnout for our show this
weekend. I can promise that if you'll show up, we'll
play our f'ing guts out for you. Thanks for reading
this, if you made it this far.

...WILDEST DREAMS COME TRUE

One of my fondest memories of 2003 was taking a road trip to see IRON MAIDEN and MOTORHEAD in Pittsburgh. Here we see three of the travelers (all brothers by the way) - SKY, BUTCHMULE, and myself - basking in the majesty of the West Virginia mountains. The trip up was full of rain and conversation and was the first major road trip on which all three siblings were present. We all got to learn a bit more about each other along the way, warts and all. Our other traveler, the ever amusing CROMAG, probably learned more than he wished to know, but was well rewarded by the journey's intended purpose. That's a hell of a photo though - three brothers separated by years and miles joined by one common goal - to finally see IRON MAIDEN, the greatest classically influenced metal band of all time, live and in person!!!!

And here is the result - very happy campers, especially me 'cause MOTORHEAD just blew me away, awaiting the first note of a MAIDEN tune. When that note fell dear readers, it was like a revival. For two hours I was with MAIDEN and thousands of others who understand and appreciate the perfect glory they have created. It was indeed the fulfillment of my 'Wildest Dreams'...

Mustang Sally

Mustang Sally is hot, hip, and cool. They are based in Nashville, but it has taken telephones and airplanes, luck, and timing to bring them together to create what is arguably the best all-girl touring band in the nation. Of course, many fans and critics have been making a strong case that Mustang Sally is one of the best bands on the road - bar none. Mustang Sally is six extremely talented women performing as one hard hitting, energetic, and electrifying band.
