JANUARY

Meaning "Janus's Month": Janus is the Roman god of gates and doorways, depicted with two faces looking in opposite directions. His festival month is January. Januarius had 29 days, until Julius when it became 31 days long. Middle English Januarie, Latin Januarius "of Janus", Latin Janu(s) "Janus" + -arius "ary (pertaining to)", Latin Januarius mensis "month of Janus".

Lennon and Career Suicide

My copy of Lennon's new CD (only available online (Lennon Online) or at a live show) was waiting on me when I arrived home today. It could not have come at a better time as I was all stressed out after a long evening of Christmas shopping.

Where to start about this CD?

I read her dedication as the first song, Jacob, was starting. - It pulled me heart first into the CD.

This is for those who never sleep
Who spend their nights contemplating why the day must come
This for those who never fall in love
Only living for what had been and will never be again,
This is for those who I see more of their back then their face
For they enter with no words but when they're gone you know,
This is for you.
--- Lennon Murphy

The CD is acoustic driven with only Lennon and her piano until the last song but we will be there in a moment.. The song list is a mixture of a five older songs off her first CD 5:30 Saturday Morning: I Hear, Couldn't Breathe, Brake Of Your Car, Morning, and Asking You and five new songs: Jacob, What You're Saying, Goodbye, Main Gravel Road, and And You. The already powerful songs are stepped up a notch in intensity as the songs are presented as she originally wrote and performed the songs. The new songs are equally as intense and powerful. The beautiful lyrics combined with the rich and crisp piano spear your heart and intertwine with your soul.

The last song, Asking You starts out a cappella and ends with string violins. Echoes (especially in Pro Logic mode) at the beginning provide a great backdrop until the string violins accompany her until the end. Her voice never wavers and only proves further how beautiful she sings (and is not bad on the piano either). I highly recommend this CD. Go to Lennon Online and buy it! She signs and mails it personally!

Toys For Tots Metal Blitzkrieg Set For Rafters Dec. 20

Metal fans of all ages are invited to come out to the Toys For Tots Metal Blitzkrieg at Rafters on Saturday night December 20. It will be a night to remember as 5 local metal bands lend their talent to bring a wonderful Christmas to children in need.

Great local bands Dank, Evixion, Blindsight, Omega Tribe, and downBleed rise to the occasion to share the joy of Christmas in their own style of metal madness. The cover is $7 or an unwrapped toy of equal or greater value. All proceeds at the door will be turned over to a representative of the Marine Corps who will collect the money and toys to make a child’s Christmas that much better.

If you had planned to give this year – this is a no lose situation. You get the satisfaction of helping someone in need and receive a killer concert for your efforts!

The order the bands will play will be determined the night of the show. Doors open at 7:30 and the first band will go on shortly thereafter. Toys For Tots Metal Blitzkrieg is an all age show. Downtown Rafters. 410 E. State of Franklin Rd. Johnson City TN 423-232-6520.

VIVA DEL SANTO!!!!!

While in Knoxville this weekend I was able to attend the SOUTHERN CULTURE ON THE SKIDS show at BLUE CATS. I first saw these guys way back in '93 at ROCKIN' ON THE RIVER. They blew me away then and have never failed since. It turned out to be Chris 'Cousin Crispy' Bess' last show and I was glad to be in attendance for the momentous occasion. SCOTS have gained national exposure over the years having been featured on soundtracks such as I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER and BEAVIS AND BUTT-HEAD DO AMERICA. Their video for CAMEL WALK also saw heavy rotation on MTV a few years ago. Friday night's show was a blast and all the crowd pleasers were played - KING OF THE MOUNTAIN, LIQUORED UP AND LACQUERED DOWN, DADDY WAS A PREACHER MAMA WAS A GO-GO GIRL, and HOUSE OF BAMBOO to name a few. The raucous set ended with EIGHT PIECE BOX and a personal favorite, VIVA DEL SANTO. The mandatory chicken hurling dancers were onstage, of course. Any chance to see this band should be taken! Here are some regional opportunities...

12-19-03 - THE CASBAH - Johnson city, TN

12-20-03 - ZIGGY'S - Winston-Salem, NC

12-31-03 - ORANGE PEEL - Asheville, NC

More on Erin McKeown

From the Imperfectly.com page featuring Ms. McKeown...

Erin McKeown is a folksinger / songwriter originally from Fredericksburg, Va. her music career got started when in 1995 she was named a semi-finalist by the songwriters' association of Washington DC in their mid-Atlantic song contest for the modern rock/alternative category. She subsequently started her own record label, TVP records. Through TVP, she has released a self-titled debut, Monday morning cold, and her latest, distillation (now re-released on signature sounds).

Erin recently completed an Ethnomusicology degree at brown university. She has played with such artists as Dar Williams, Andy Stochansky, Pamela Means, the Nields, Ani Difranco, and Melissa Ferrick. She was also featured as part of the "Voices on the Verge" series in the New England area (with fellow folk artists Jess Klein, Rose Polenzani, and Beth Amsel).

I am going to the show in Asheville on Dec 8 at the Orange Peel. I highly recommend this show, as there aren't too many opportunities like this if you like folk/funk with a twist of spunk for good measure.

I am liking this stuff more and more.
